Why medicinal herbs?
I have always been fascinated about the benefits plants have in relation to medicinal purposes. This is not an excuse to dismiss the achievements of modern medicine, but to instead understand how modern medicene can be complimented by the power of nature.
What I hope to achieve
I want to create a farm that grows as many different medicinal plants as I possibly can. Where the mood strikes, I plan on creating products from these plants and where I need to source ingredients, I want to find local suppliers, and if there isn't someone close to me, then I want to stick within Australia. I want to do this to maintain the quality of the product I supply.
What made me want to start this?
Take Calendula for example. I have purchased flowers from my local health food store and they were straw yellow. This indicates the benefits provided by the flowers are degraded. This is due to either importing the product from overseas and then plant has been around for way too long, or the flowers have been exposed to high heat or sunlight, again ruining the potency of the material.
I have then purchased calendula from a grower in Australia and the flowers I got were bright orange. The balm I made from these flowers, to me, performed so much better than the flowers I purchased from the health food store. I was actually amazed at how well it worked.
It was that moment that made me decide, there is certainly power in nature and the way to get that power is to grow with purpose and intent. People who have bought calendula from this health food store are missing out and are perhaps disatisfied with calendula when in fact, it works so well! So I want to change this.
From there my mind started ticking over, I started growing seeds to plant in my yard and I started to formuate my first product, the Calendula and Oat Balm.
Knowing people with dogs that have allergies and struggle badly, and after reading about the benefits of calendula for the skin, I started to ponder, and research pet safe ingredients and that lead to the foundation of the balm.
